Alconetar

ALCONÉTAR Cáceres, Spain.

Deserted site at the confluence of the Tajo and Almonte rivers, where the Roman road from Augusta Emerita to Asturica Augusta crossed the Tajo over a bridge 290 m long. Several piers and arches survive, two sets of which have been reconstructed. In the vicinity is the Turmulos inansio of the Antonine Itinerary 433.5. Ruins of a Roman castrum and parts of a wall of granite blocks have been found, and an Early Christian basilica of the 5th or 6th c., built on the ruins of an earlier villa. The site is now flooded.
