Choeroboscus

Choeroboscus , Geo'rgius

(Γεώργιος Χοιροβοσκός), a Greek grammarian, who lived probably towards the end of the sixth century of the Christian aera. Works de Figuris poeticis, oratoriis, et theologicis (περὶ τρόπου τῶν κατὰ ποιητικὴν καὶ θεολογικὴν Χρῆσιν)

He is the author of various grammatical and rhetorical works, of which only one has been printed, namely de Figuris poeticis, oratoriis, et theologicis (περὶ τρόπου τῶν κατὰ ποιητικὴν καὶ θεολογικὴν Χρῆσιν). Editions

This has been published with a Latin translation together with the dissertation of Proclus on divine and poetical instinct, by Morellus, Paris, 1615, 12mo. Other Works

His other works, the MSS. of which are scattered in the principal libraries of this country (Bodleian) and the continent, treat on various grammatical matters; his treatise on the Greek accent, the MS. of which is in the Vatican library, seems to deserve particular attention.

Several treatises on theological matters, which are extant in MS. are likewise attributed to him. But as Choeroboscus is generally quoted by the earlier writers as Georgius Grammaticus, or Georgius Diaconus--he was a priest--he might sometimes have been confounded with some other grammarian or theologian of that name.
