Dobree

Dobree , Peter Paul

, an English scholar of eminence, born in the island of Guernsey of French ancestry, in 1782. He studied under Porson at the University of Cambridge, and on the death of that distinguished Hellenist undertook to edit his unpublished papers, which had come into the possession of Trinity College. In 1820, appeared the Plutus of Aristophanes with Porson's notes; and in 1822, the Lexicon of Photius. In the same year, Dobree was made Regius Professor of Greek. On his death in 1825, he left an edition of Demosthenes in MS., which was edited and published by his successor.
