Metchley

METCHLEY Warwickshire, England.

This site, discovered in 1934 and partially excavated in 1967-69, lies below various buildings of the University of Birmingham. It consists of a number of forts on the line of Ryknield Street. The first fort was Claudian (4.2 ha) with substantial timber buildings. An annex (1.6 ha) was later added, and after an apparent period of abandonment a fort (2.5 ha) was built inside the earlier one in the Flavian period, which appears to have lasted into the early 2d c.
