vavassorius

vavassorius [vavassor+-ius] 1 (as sb. m., class of) feudal tenant whose holding is from a superior tenant and not directly from the crown, undertenant, vavasour. ibi manet quidam ~ius habens ij vac' (Hants) DB I 53rb. 2 (as sb. f. or n.) land or fee held by a vavasour (v. et. vavassarius). de vavasoriis (Quad.) GAS 544 tit.; c1160 dedit apud Sanctam Crucem eidem sancto unum ~ium xx acrarum terre Act. Hen. II I 285; quod dicitur de baronia non est observandum in ~ia vel aliis minoribus feodis quam baronia Bracton f. 93b.
