Auve

AUVE Maine, France.

A Gallo-Roman villa with broken-down walls W of Sainte-Menehould in Champagne. It has been partly explored, and consists of a series of central rooms between porticos to the E and W. Pits and well-cut post-holes found inside the rooms and in some cases underneath the foundations are evidence of a settlement dating from Iron Age III. Outside the villa there was a defensive trench which also had a stockade and no doubt protected a settlement, probably of the Late Bronze Age.
