Rocester

ROCESTER Staffordshire, England.

On the road from Little Chester (Derventio) and Chesterton (Newcastle-under-Lyme); the NW portion has produced much Roman material. Limited excavation indicates the presence of a Flavian fort occupied until the early 2d c., but later forts may yet be discovered. There is also a large walled civil settlement of ca. 3.6 ha, with defenses of two periods; the wall was inserted probably in the 4th c. Finds, however, have been made well beyond these areas.
