(Βερόη), a Trojan woman, married to Doryclus, one of the companions of Aeneas. Iris assumed the appearance of Beroe when she per-suaded the women to set fire to the ships of Aeneas on the coast of Sicily. (Verg. A. 5.620), &c.) There are three other mythical personages of this name, concerning whom nothing of interest is related. (Hygin. Fab. 167; Virg. Georg. 4.341 ; Nonnus, Dionys. 41.155.) [L.S]
the wife of Glaucias, an Illyrian king, took charge of Pyrrhus when his father, Aeacides, was expelled from Epeirus in B. C. 316. (Justin, 17.3.)
(Βερόη). (1) An old woman of Epidaurus, nurse to Semelé. Heré assumed her shape when she persuaded Semelé not to receive the visits of Zeus if he did not appear in the majesty of a god (Ovid, Met. iii. 278).
(2) The wife of Doryclus, whose form was assumed by Iris, at the instigation of Heré, when she advised the Trojan women to burn the fleet of Aeneas in Sicily (Verg. Aen. v.).
A station on the limes of the lower Danube, between Carsium and Troesmis, placed by the Tab. Peut. (8.3) at 21 Roman miles and by the It. Ant. (225,1) at 18 Roman miles from Troesmis. The Cuneus Equitum Stablesianorum was stationed here (Not. Dig. or. 39.5). In the 6th c. the place is mentioned as an episcopal residence (531). Recent research in the cemetery has uncovered 1100 inhumation graves (2d-7th c. and 10th-12th c.). Near the cemetery was a large civil settlement. Recently traces of life from the 10th-11th c. have been discovered here, superimposed on levels from the Roman and Roman-Byzantine periods. In these earlier levels were buildings with stone walls.
